AlphaGo’s Move 37 - Thomas Ryckewaert and Marijn Ottenhof

Go is the oldest board game in the world with more possible moves than the number of atoms in the universe. In 2016, world champion Lee Sedol was challenged by AlphaGo, a deep neural network developed by Google's DeepMind. Nobody expected the blunt computing power of a machine to beat the intuition and creativity of a top player. But AlphaGo won 4-1 over Sedol and made the cover of Nature magazine. AlphaGo's 37th move in the second game hit like a bomb. The computer made a move no human could have imagined. Sedol left the room looking pale; the commentators fell silent; and time seemed to stand still. In AlphaGo's Move 37, Belgian actor and director Thomas Ryckewaert and Dutch artist Marijn Ottenhof forge this moment into an alienating lecture-performance about phenomena beyond human imagination.
